About the Author's Alcove

Background
The Alcove was formed in December 1999 by a group of amateur online authors. Through this site, we hope to
* display new works of fiction by non-professional authors,
* provide authors with constructive criticism,
* advise new writers about copyright and publishing,
* and provide a supportive environment for our authors to work in.
Whether you are an aspiring author or curious reader, we hope that you will find the Author's Alcove both useful and fun!

Benefits of Membership
You are welcome to contribute as much or as little as you are able and willing to. We are a non-profit organization, and through the volunteer work of authors and readers we have created a site for everyone to share.
For Writers: If you have been seeking a place to share your works with interested readers and gain experience, then you've found it here. The network of editors and fellow authors is very supportive and helpful. You are also welcome to use our library of links and information about copyrights and publishing information.
For Readers: This site offers numerous new, unpublished stories for you to enjoy completely for free. Your contribution is to critique these writers, letting them know how their work affects their audience.

Structure of the Alcove
The Alcove was set up to help keep things simple and easy to use. More information on the programming and other features can be found on our information page.
In order to best meet the needs of Alcove members, our site has a variety of features and options for written material. This allows writers to explore a variety of creative opportunities, and gives readers a wide range of choices to peruse. There are three main types of literature on our site:
Short Stories of all types are prevalent on this site. This is limited to original, fictional works only.
Novels by Alcove writers are in more secure areas, as they are being written for publication rather than recreation or practice. Their presence on the site gives their authors access to a variety of feedback.
Collective Writing is one of the Alcove's unique features is the collective writing formats we offer. Groups of authors collaborate to create a storyline, each writing their own character(s) and interacting with others to develop a plot. While it can take more work to coordinate this type of writing, it also offers all the advantages of friendship and teamwork.
Please be sure to indicate which form of writing you are interested in on your membership form. If you have any additional suggestions, we are very interested in hearing them.
